In 1839 nineteen-year-old Edmund Becquerel, a French experimental physicist, discovered the photovoltaic effect while experimenting with an electrolytic cell made up of two metal electrodes in his fathers laboratory.
In 1883 Charles Fritts built the first solid state photovoltaic cell by coating the semiconductor selenium with a thin layer of gold to form the junctions; the device was only around 1% efficient. In 1955 Hoffman Electronics's Semiconductor Division announced a commercial PV product at 2% efficiency priced at $1,500.00 a watt.
Solar technogy was first recognized in 1958, which was the year when the first PV-powered satellite was launched, when it was used on the Vanguard I satellite in space and Hoffman Electronics achieved 9% efficiency on the solar modules .
1971 Solar PV costs $100 per watt. Today, your average solar modules are 18% efficient and are priced at $1.00 a watt. Solar installation costs to have solar installed on your home or business is $3.20 a watt.
